The Mix
Reducing Cement.
We replace twenty percent of our standard cement mix with fly-ash, a by-product of the coal industry. This not only helps reduce the total amount of cement used, finds a purpose for fly-ash beyond landfills, it also reduces the total amount of water needed to create concrete.

The ideas that became CarbonStone began at a student event focused on Net Zero emissions targets. This has led sustainability to be a core principle of our business since the beginning.

Materials
PLA
PLA, or polylactic acid, is a plastic material derived from corn, making it a more eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastics. This is the primary material we use in our 3D printing for design purposes.
Recycled glass
We use recycled glass aggregate in our concrete designs to give discarded material a second life. Beyond reducing environmental impact, the glass introduces refined texture and light-catching detail — transforming waste into something intentional and enduring.
Recycled paper
Used in certain concrete compositions, we incorporate recycled paper pulp and wood products to change the effect of certain concrete pieces, while reducing the functional cement input required.
Fly ash
We proudly incorporate fly ash into our cement, utilizing it as a sustainable alternative to enhance the performance of our concrete products. By including fly ash in all of our designs, we not only reduce waste but also contribute to a more eco-friendly construction process.

How is Carbonstone's concrete more sustainable than standard concrete?
We replace roughly 20% of the standard cement in our mix with fly-ash, an industrial by-product of the coal industry. Cement is the most carbon-intensive part of concrete, so replacing a portion of it lowers the carbon footprint and water use of every piece we cast.
What is fly-ash and why do you use it?
Fly-ash is a fine powder captured from coal-fired power plants that would otherwise go to landfill. When added to a concrete mix it acts as a supplementary cementitious material, giving discarded material a second life and reducing the amount of Portland cement required.

Are Carbonstone pieces recyclable at end of life?
Cured concrete can be crushed and reused as aggregate in new concrete, road base, or fill. Our pieces are designed to last generations.

Every piece is hand-cast in our Calgary, Alberta studio using locally sourced materials wherever possible.
